Diabetes
The facts:
At least 250 million people world wide are affected by diabetes, and the number is increasing.
Left untreated, elevated blood glucose levels lead to vascular disease. Toes and feet necrotise, the renal function is impaired and nerves are damaged. The vision can decrease. The results are foot amputation, haemodialysis and blindness.
Diabetes can be prevented with a healthy diet and lots of exercise. Overweight promotes the development of diabetes.
It is crucial to identify patients with elevated blood glucose before damages occur. Medical treatment and diet can reduce the blood glucose levels and the illness can be brought under control.
Diabetes can easily be determined with the analysis of a urine specimen. Moreover, this analysis allows us to determine whether the symptoms of a diabetic are well controlled and whether s/he suffered renal damage.
What we are testing:
A mailed in urine specimen will be analysed for its sugar (glucose) and protein (total protein and albumin) levels. If the blood glucose levels are elevated, excess sugar is excreted via urine. If the kidneys are damaged as a result of diabetes, they become permeable to blood protein. The determination of albumin in urine signifies that renal damage has occurred.
When should you take this test?
The analysis is suitable for every healthy human after the age of approximately 40. It is considered an analysis within the scope of the regular physical examination. It is crucial to have this analysis done as long as you are healthy.
In patients with pre-existing diabetes, the analysis can be used to verify that their symptoms are well controlled. However, in diabetics this analysis does not replace the blood tests conducted by their general practitioner.
The results are available within 3 days upon request of the test materials.
How to use this test? (To instructions on how to collect a urine specimen)
For the determination of glucose, we require a urine specimen. You may collect the urine specimen any time
during the day. Please follow the instructions on the illustrations (pictograms), explaining the proper collection of specimens.
How and when will you receive the results?
You will receive the results within 3 days.
What happens if the results reveal elevated levels?
If you were healthy before the test you should visit your general practitioner. Because you can bring along the
test results, s/he will be able to determine the severity of your diabetes by means of targeted examinations and initiate an effective treatment.
If you know that you have diabetes, you may use the results for self-monitoring. However, the analysis does not replace regular follow-up examinations conducted by your general practitioner or a specialist.
What happens if the tests show regular levels?
Elevated blood glucose levels can be excluded for you. This does not mean that you will not get diabetes. Therefore, we recommend that you repeat the test approximately every 3 – 5 years.
Should you suffer from any symptoms, please contact your general practitioner.
